I was introduced to homeopathy in 1974 when I started getting my fourth flu of the winter season. My new roommate, an assistant to a homeopathic physician, recommended Gelsemium. Imagine my surprise when I was symptom-free 4 hours later! She then suggested that I see the homeopath for my intense, nonstop hay fever. I had a chemistry background & was very skeptical, but decided to do a small, one-person trial of homeopathy. The day after my appointment, I woke up symptom-free. I was hooked! I wanted to go study homeopathy, but there were no schools in the country then & almost no books so I studied on my own & helped family, friends, & pets. I learned a lot about acute ailments, everyday illnesses like my son’s earache, my friend’s cold, the cat’s UTI & the eye infection that the duck had. The mini-case below was my first experience at choosing a remedy. There are currently wonderful books available for people to learn about basics of first aid & acute homeopathy & experience the wonder of homeopathic healing first hand.

When I moved to the Bay Area I was delighted to find seminars for professional homeopaths. These involved a deeper level of study for chronic or more long-term issues. I became involved with the organization that presented the seminars & realized that a systematic plan of study was needed to once again train homeopaths in America. With the help of the organization, Pacific Academy of Homeopathic Medicine, & two teachers I founded a 3-year school. It was the first new homeopathic school in this country that was open to everyone who wanted to become a professional homeopath. I invited homeopaths from South America, Europe & the Middle East to provide more advanced training. I also help found the two certification boards in North America, North American Society of Homeopaths & Council for Homeopathic Certification, (North America) & am currently certified by both.

Over the years I have delighted in sharing the potential of homeopathy to study groups, empowering people to safely care for the every day ailments of their families & inspiring a new generation of professional homeopaths.  In the same way I enjoy the transformation of deep healing & the freedom from chronic symptoms that homeopathy can provide.  People today are very aware that the stress of our fast-paced lives & the stress of unprocessed emotions can initiate illness. I enjoy helping people understand & release those stresses with a nontoxic, nonaddicting system that can gently return people to health.

Currently the homeopathic profession is vibrant with new information & I enjoy staying current with these new trends. Recently I completed the C.E.A.S.E. training. This technique helps people whose healing has been blocked by the ill-effects of vaccines, drugs or toxins. C.E.A.S.E. is especially well known for helping those with autism to heal.

Case
My new roommate’s 9-year-old daughter had come down with a bout of stomach flu. She had no appetite & was feeling nauseous with some stomach cramps. The shades were drawn & the lights were off since her eyes were sensitive to the light. She was also sensitive to noise & just wanted to sit quietly in her bed by herself. I gave her a single dose of Nux Vomica 30C. My roommate & I left her to rest quietly while we went to eat dinner. Twenty minutes later the daughter walked into the dining room & announced, “I’m hungry. What’s for dinner?” She ate dinner & had no further symptoms.

I completed Medical College in New Delhi, India, and then went on to do an M.S in Biology after moving to San Francisco.  After working for 5 years as a molecular biology researcher at UCSF, I became interested in Homeopathy, and completed a four-year course from the School of Homeopathy, Devon, U.K.  Meeting homeopaths from all over the world who are masters in this highly nuanced field is enlightening and humbling.  In addition to the School of Homeopathy, I have had the privilege of studying and collaborating extensively with Dr. Jose Isaac who runs a 400-bed government homeopathic hospital in Kerala, India.
Having taken the “scenic route” to homeopathy I now have a family practice, where I see patients at all phases of their lives.  Because of my medical training and background, I like to look at test results, radiology evidence, and physician opinions when they are available.  I practice in the Richmond district of San Francisco, but also do skype and phone consultations for patients who cannot meet in person.
Growing up in a family of physicians there was a general acceptance that I too would study and practice medicine.  However, no one in my family anticipated that the modality I would adopt to treat patients would be homeopathy.   Today, I have several physicians as patients who are often surprised and impressed with the simplicity and effectiveness of homeopathic treatment.

Case on the Digestive system:
The patient, “Jane”, was a 37 year old lady whose mother called me for a consultation.  Jane had been suffering from acute sharp pain in the right hypochondrium for the past 4 days.  She was unable to move at all because of the pain, as any movement or jolting caused a new spasm.  There was also accompanying pain on the tip of the right shoulder.  She was talking carefully during the consultation and looked quite weak.  For the past 3 days, she had been unable to eat or drink anything much.  Anything she took in, including water, she vomited out.  In addition, she was vomiting out green bile.
An ultrasound done 2 days prior revealed multiple small gall stones.  She had been given a number of pain killers by her physician, but they were not helping her.  The pain, and vomiting were all still there.
Treatment:  I prescribed Belladonna 12C and told her to repeat it every hour for 3 hours.  She called me after about 2 ½ hours and said the pain had come down by about 75 percent.  She joked and laughed as she talked to me and was clearly feeling much more relaxed now.   She was hungry and I asked her to have a few sips of water, and maybe something light to eat to see if she could keep it down.  Her appetite returned, and a couple of days later, she told me that she took her daughter to the playground.  I followed up and completed her treatment with Lycopodium at high potencies in order to be sure that this problem did not recur.

I first encountered homeopathy about 15 years ago, when I consulted a homeopath to help with my children’s continuous colds and respiratory infections. It was my first experience with alternative medicine of any kind. I was somewhat skeptical, but I knew that my traditional pediatrician had nothing to offer me to help my son combat these infections, recover sooner or stop getting them altogether! I discovered that homeopathy did offer acute care to recover from illnesses, and long-term health and vitality. During our years of working together, my homeopath did more than just treat my children; he opened my eyes to the elegant, complex and powerful healing system of homeopathy. As I became increasingly interested with homeopathy, I started to secretly dream about practicing homeopathy myself. When I told my homeopath about it, he strongly encouraged me to pursue it, and a light bulb clicked on. Right then, I felt my whole life had been leadingup to that moment. My interest in science, botany, zoology, psychology and my years of being a practicing artist and mother of two children had prepared me perfectly for this.Homeopathy combines art, science and medicine, and requires many diverse skills including critical thinking, determination, intuition, compassion, love and the inability to be put off by detailed descriptions of bodily fluids. That very November night I signed up for school, and just like that – my dream came true.

Now I am a certified classical homeopath with a family practice in San Anselmo, California.I am a graduate of the Berkeley Institute of Homeopathy, with additional years of training atthe Pacific Academy of Homeopathy and the Luminos School of Homeopathy. I also  completed an intensive homeopathic program at The Other Song Academy in Mumbai, India with world-renowned educator and homeopath, Rajan Sankaran. In addition to my two years of practical clinical training through school, I completed a 16-month internship withDr. Ifeoma Ikenze, MD, a medical doctor with a homeopathic family practice in Marin County.

Currently, I am a frequent guest collaborator and parent educator at Pediatric Alternatives, apediatric medical practice in Mill Valley. I have taught at the Berkeley Institute ofHomeopathy, I supervise homeopathic students, I consult for the Council for Homeopathic Certification, and frequently speak on homeopathy at industry seminars, elementary and middle schools in Marin.

Prior to embarking on my homeopathic education, I earned a Masters degree in Fine Arts from Art Center College of Design, Pasadena, CA and a BFA in Photography from the School of Visual Arts, NYC. I am a proud native of California with deep roots in San Francisco that go back 5 generations. My husband and two sons are my deepest source of inspiration and determination, as well as perspiration.

Case:
I recently had a case of a 9 year-old girl with chronic stomach pain that was interfering withher ability to attend school. At the time of our first meeting, she was missing school 50% ofthe time, and was often being picked up in the middle of the day with stomach pain. The stomach pains came on at any time; at home, with friends and during the summer, butthey especially came on before and during school. She was a precocious, passionate andsensitive child, drawn to creativity and had a strongly jealous nature. She was very sensitive to criticism and in the normal course of a class, took her teacher’s attempt to teach her as acriticism. The girl was demanding to leave school altogether and learn entirely on her own, without a teacher of any kind. She felt she was completely capable of teaching herself all she needed to know, and she was only in 3rd grade! Her mother was seriously considering this request, but she was not sure what to do. She felt anxious that school could be “hurting” her child. This was an extremely charged situation, and I understood that the girl must feel very strongly to have such an extreme reaction.

I prescribed Lachesis for this theatrical, jealous, sensitive and passionate young girl, and asked to see her again in a month. In a month’s time, the stomach aches were 90% gone, and she was going to school with only a little bit of grumbling. After 4 months, the mother reported that the stomach aches were completely gone, and she had not picked her up from school at all in 2 months. Additionally, her daughter was spontaneously saying that she was enjoying school, and felt very competent, even in math, her least favorite subject. Additionally, she is less jealous with her friends and expressing herself in positive and productive ways, such as theater.
